Fire Opal is the transparent form of opal and like other opal forms, consists of silicic acid with a relatively high water content, was named for its colour. Its name is derived from the Roman word ‘Opalus’, related to the Ops, the wife of Saturn, the Goddess of fertility.Being the member of semi-precious stones, the gemstone is composed in spherical layers to create three-dimensional spaces to lend radiance and intensity to the stone. It has an internal structure which causes it to diffract light thus exhibiting a range of colours. Depending on the conditions under which the stone is formed, fire opal exhibits different colours varying from yellow to orange and to red which gives fire to its name. And the more intense its body colour is - in other words, the more ‘fire' it has- the more valuable a Fire Opal will be. It can be mainly found in Brazil, but the other places where fire opal is mined are Honduras or Guatemala, USA, Canada, Australia, Ethiopia and Turkey.
Taking places in many legends, Fire Opal is famous especially in Mexico. In Mayas and Aztecs, it was believed that a gem such an extent as the fire opal with that kind of vivacity could only have been created in the waters of paradise. That’s why they called it quetzalitzlipyollitli, the 'stone of the bird of paradise'. And they used the stone for ritualistic purposes. That’s why today, fire opal is the national gemstone of Mexico. On the other hand, there is a rumor that Cleopatra worn a set of fire opals to attract Mark Anthony, ruler of Rome. And Queen Victoria used the pieces of opal jewelry as a protector against evil and enemies. As a plethora of colors and the symbol of heavenly beauty, Fire Opal is the October birthstone.
